Day 2 - The Action

Starting the day with a stack just short of 16,000 I knew I'd be getting busy early on.  Just quite how early though was a bit of surprise.

This was the table, which coincidently enough was Table 13 again, and although I was in seat 3 this time (not 4), it was actually the same chair.  Variety being the spice of life and all that.

  1. Pernille Ravn
  2. Simon Mycock
  3. Daniel Phillips
  4. Steven Heard
  5. Atle Walgren
  6. Peter Jepsen
  7. Anders Berg
  8. Donny Morris

Anyway, first hand, I had Ace of ClubsKind of Spades and my raise took a call and the blinds down uncontested.   Nice start.

Next hand, the UTG player shoves his remaining 9,000 in.  All fold round to me on the button, and I look at my cards - Kind of DiamondsKind of Hearts.  I re-raise all-in, and everyone else folds.  The other player shows Ace of DiamondsKind of Spades, and the Ace of Hearts on the flop meant that I was back down to about 10,000.

So, two hands in and I've had the hole cards I wanted, but not the results to go with them.

After that, I fold a fair few, and then take the blinds down with a pair of queens.  Then a big hand takes place.

Atle Walgren is first to act, and makes it 2,500 to go (blinds 400/800).  Everyone folds round to me, and it's an easy push all-in with Jack of ClubsJack of Hearts from the small blind.  The big blind Steven Heard (a fellow Englishman) comes over the top, all in for 20k, which is too much for Atle.

Steven announces "Lucky sevens", but soon changes that to "Unlucky Sevens…" when I flip over my cards.  The Queen of Spades3 of Spades2 of HeartsQueen of Diamonds10 of Diamonds board means that I more than double up, and I'm back up to 18,000.

A few more all-in pushes, with Kind of HeartsJack of Hearts unopposed, and a re-raise all-in with 3 of Hearts3 of Diamonds against  Pernille's 4,000 raise - and I was happy for her to fold after she stared me down for a few minutes.

So I was up to about 19,000 - and the blinds were still going up.  So although I'd increased my stack, I was still hoping for a double up to put me in a more comfortable position.  The opportunity came sooner rather than later.

Simon Mycock, who was the chip-leader at the table was constantly raising all-in to steal the blinds.  As he was sitting directly to my right, he would be stealing my big blind a few times.  One hand, and all folded to Simon who, not surprisingly, moved all-in.  I called instantly with my Ace of ClubsKind of Clubs and was fairly happy to see Simon turn over 5 of Hearts7 of Clubs.

However, the flop of 9 of Clubs3 of Hearts6 of Diamonds gave the hand a sense of inevitability
The turn was 10 of Diamonds, and so any 4, 8 or 7 gave him the hand. The 7 of Hearts gave him a pair, and my adventure in Copenhagen was over in 90th place.

Poker can be a cruel game at times, but I'm fairly happy with my play overall.  It's a shame I never got the opportunity to play with a larger stack and see what I could do.

Interestingly, Simon went on to win a monster pot soon after I was knocked out, and as of now (6pm), he's the current chip leader with a massive 180,000 chips.

So, it's back to the smaller tourneys for me.  But hopefully one day I can qualify for another major tournament…I enjoyed this one!

Well done. You’ve got to start somewhere and this was it…

You can only get better.

Well done for getting so far Dan - an unfortunate turn - odds were slightly in your favour but lady luck had taken a pee break and fortune smiled on someone else. Enjoy the rest of your stay! Love to Michelle.

Ah well, better luck next time!

Don’t worry Dan, you’re still my hero.

Seriously though, bad luck. Sounded like you called the guy’s bluff and he lucked out big time.

On the plus side, you’ve broken your duck on the pro circuit, so next time you’ll be ever more ready for the challenges ahead!

Speak when you get back chief. Enjoy the rest of the trip.

bad luck old chap. all experience, so i expect you to win a WPT event before September so you can fund my holiday.
